WRRAP Signs the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Amicus Brief at the Supreme Court
WRRAP signs the Amicus Brief at the Supreme Court this week
Earlier this week, WRRAP joined a coalition of 36 abortion funds and practical support organizations in submitting an amicus — or friend of the court — brief at the Supreme Court in opposition to Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. The brief discusses the barriers abortion fund and practical support clients face in accessing care before 15 weeks of pregnancy. For these individuals, there is no practical difference between banning abortion at fifteen weeks and a total abortion ban.
WRRAP, the Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project, is the only independent 501(c)(3) abortion fund that provides urgently-needed financial assistance, on a national level, to those seeking abortions or emergency contraception. WRRAP funds patients in all 50 states. During 2020 WRRAP was able to fund 2,250 people across the country distributing over $456,000 in funds, 77% of whom were Black, Indigenous and People of Color. Many of the individuals WRRAP supports are in hostile and very hostile states and 82% of the cases had their partner abandon them, leaving the financial burden on the pregnant person. Abortion funds and practical support networks provide a broad range of services to pregnant people seeking abortion care throughout the United States, including funding, transportation, lodging, and legal services.
“As the largest and only independent national abortion fund supporting folks in all 50 states, we hear every single day about the impact of state bans. While Texas has been by far the most alarming, the upcoming SCOTUS case is equally disturbing because it is asking the court to overturn Roe. If Roe falls, half the states in the country are positioning to ban abortion entirely. As more and more people will now be forced to leave their communities and get care at clinics in other states, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting folks who need abortions and the providers that are able to see them. Abortion care can’t wait and WRRAP was built for this moment and is ready to help,” says Sylvia Ghazarian, Executive Director of WRRAP.
