WRRAP announces Abortion Pills by Mail Program

WRRAP announces new Abortion Pills By Mail Program – Simple, Affordable, Convenient, and Safe Access.

WRRAP is proud to announce the launch of our “Abortion Pills by Mail” pilot program working in collaboration with a group of new telemedicine abortion providers in 20 states. The abortion pill is safe and effective in ending 95% of pregnancies and accounts for 54% of all abortions in the U.S.

WRRAP’s role in this pilot program is to fund patients within the states that are going to absorb a lot of demand for this convenient safe method of care.

WRRAP is preparing for a huge increase in patient funding needs based on our providers indicating that patient volume has tripled since the new Texas SB8 copycat abortion bans. Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Florida are the latest in this avalanche of anti-abortion legislation restricting access, increasing costs for abortion care, and waiting times at clinics to schedule an appointment.

“WRRAP is expanding access intentionally choosing friendly states to abortion access. The reality is that SCOTUS will probably severely weaken or overturn Roe. Medication abortion will become more critical in the delivery of care to many people unable to access or afford care in a clinic, said Sylvia Ghazarian, Executive Director of WRRAP.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, California would see a nearly 3,000% increase in out-of-state women needing abortions, while Illinois would see nearly a 9,000% increase.

In December 2021, the FDA permanently approved abortion pills by mail, allowing patients to receive medication by mail instead of requiring them to obtain pills by visiting a health clinic.

Medication abortion can be completed safely outside of a medical setting and can be especially useful in addressing logistical burdens abortion patients often face when they have to visit a provider to obtain care, such as arranging for child care and time off work and paying for transportation costs. And, in areas of the country that are rural or underserved by providers, medication abortion can save patients hundreds of miles of travel.

While WRRAP is early in our pilot program, many patients report they felt more comfortable and relieved with a self-managed abortion at home which allowed for a more private and confidential abortion. Some also indicated it allowed them to not have to take time off from school or work, which most patients can’t afford to do.

All patients served thus far are grateful that this method was less costly and happy to know that WRRAP’s abortion funding paid for their abortion care, since the cost would still have been a barrier to care.

Joyce Schorr, WRRAP President and Founder said, “WRRAP continues to fund medication abortion in any state that is willing to provide this safety net. Money and access should never be an obstacle to care.”
