Immigration enforcement is reaching directly into reproductive healthcare access. A new Women’s Media Center report finds that ICE deployments across the country are pushing people, especially undocumented immigrants and mixed-status families, to cancel clinic appointments, avoid travel, and delay abortion care rather than risk encountering agents en route.
The piece ties the pattern to the federal “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which directed $75 billion toward ICE operations, and points to deployments like the one in Minneapolis, where more than 3,000 armed and masked federal agents appeared in early December. Abortion funds and providers nationwide, including Just the Pill, Midwest Access Coalition, Our Justice, and the Chicago Abortion Fund, are seeing the same shift: people turning to medication abortion by mail instead of traveling to a clinic.
WRRAP’s Sylvia Ghazarian is one of the voices at the center of this story. She reports a sharp rise in requests for the abortion pill by mail specifically in places with heavy ICE presence, and she’s direct about why: for someone weighing a trip to a clinic against the risk of a checkpoint, mail-order care removes that risk entirely. It reaches people at home, without the drive, without the exposure. As she put it, the method “helps with privacy and avoids the concern about immigration status.”
